Durante años, los aficionados al ferrocarril español dispusieron de muy pocas oportunidades y medios para el conocimiento de las líneas y material rodante de nuestro país. Afortunadamente, los denodados esfuerzos de muchos de ellos por conocer y hacer llegar al público nuestro patrimonio ferroviario (esfuerzos generalmente poco valorados, cuando no completamente ignorados) han dado lugar a la aparición de una cultura ferroviaria y al despegue de las publicaciones sobre ferrocarriles en nuestro país, auspiciadas por instituciones, asociaciones y editores firmemente involucrados en la divulgación de ese patrimonio, tanto en lo que se refiere al tratamiento y estudio del material rodante como al conocimiento de las distintas líneas desde el punto de vista histórico.
No obstante, y a pesar de las múltiples aportaciones de estos pioneros, aún existe una parcela del ferrocarril español poco explorada hasta la fecha: La del ferrocarril industrial. La línea Villalba - Berrocal queda englobada en ella, por lo que este libro viene a paliar en parte esta situación: no se trata del habitual libro fotográfico, sino que profundiza en los orígenes e historia de la línea sin olvidar, claro está, su material rodante.
Se trata de una aportación singular a la literatura ferroviaria española, pues en esta línea confluyen varias circunstancias peculiares, como son su ancho de vía, su actividad o el hecho de haber sido explotada por una gran compañía como la del Norte y después por Renfe, constituyendo por sus características un caso único en ambas administraciones.
