8 de Abril de 2008El recorrido comienza en las inmediaciones del Euroforum Felipe II, que se deja a mano izquierda, al igual que la pared de la presa de El Romeral. Se asciende entre las urbanizaciones de la calle de la Presa hasta alcanzar un camino forestal fácilmente reconocible por las señales rojas y blancas del sendero de Gran Recorrido GR - 10. La carretera asfaltada gira entonces a la derecha y por una estrecha vereda se llega al mirador de la Casa Rústica sobre la presa del Romeral.
El camino se encaja entre la valla de la presa y un pinar de pino laricio. Se hace un pequeño descenso y se llega al parque de la fuente de la Teja, área recreativa que en verano está siempre fresca y con agua. En las inmediaciones también está la fuente de la Currucata.
Dejando a mano izquierda el vallecillo con las fuentes, se vuelve a ascender entre robles, arces, castaños hasta alcanzar la carretera (pista forestal asfaltada) a la altura de una curva cerrada a la derecha. Enseguida, a mano izquierda, una pista de tierra comienza, es un ramal de la Cañada Real Leonesa. Aquí mismo, en el inicio de esta pista, a mano derecha, una señal de pintura roja y blanca nos indica el camino a seguir. Hay que encaramarse por encima de la pista y a partir de entonces el camino se inclina por el bosque de pinos y asciende en continuas revueltas a derecha e izquierda hasta alcanzar otra vez la carretera conocida como la Segunda Horizontal.
Se atraviesa la carretera ascendiendo en dirección norte, con pendiente sostenida. A veces hay que sortear los árboles caídos en el camino, o se puede atajar en las curvas por caminos ya marcados. Tras continuos zig-zag se llega a un rellano sin árboles, donde a mano izquierda va a quedar un pequeño pitón de gneis. Se acaba entonces la fuerte pendiente y se remonta hacia la derecha el arroyo de El Romeral, que queda a la izquierda en un angosto vallejo. Enfrente, tras el valle, se aprecia la llamada Cruz de Rubens, y la pista forestal ancha que asciende desde el puerto de Malagón. La subida ahora es por un camino recto, sin las raquetas que hemos tenido hasta ahora. El pinar poco a poco va a dejar paso a amplias zonas de prados y de piornal de montaña, donde está la fuente del Cervunal.
Desde allí, la cumbre ya es visible. Se accede por una pista amplia hacia la derecha y luego hay que desviarse a la izquierda hacia el vértice de Abantos. Desde allí las vistas del piedemonte de la sierra y del embalse de Valmayor son muy buenas pues no en vano la cumbre se eleva más de 600 metros sobre la llanura circundante.
La vuelta se puede hacer por el mismo camino, pero una variante es bajar por la solana, la misma que se quemó en el pavoroso incendio del verano de 1999. Se baja desde el vértice geodésico hasta la pista, pero en vez de seguirla a la derecha hacia la fuente del Cervunal, se gira a la izquierda, hacia una casita. Aquí hay que desviarse otra vez a la izquierda por la vertiente sur, entre retamas y piornos, haciendo varios zig zags en descenso para introducirnos en un pequeño pinar. Cuando se sale de él. A mano derecha va a quedar la arista de Abantos, el espigón rocoso de gneis que se alza vertical por toda la ladera del Monte, y en medio de las rocas, un pequeño collado de prados y matorral que se conoce como El Portachuelo. Se asciende por él y se desciende por la otra cara que nos lleva dar a la senda por la que antes se ha subido, y que ahora habría que tomar en descenso.
